A guy from the Carmel Valley end of Del Mar found me through a neighbor. He'd already paid a locksmith who walked away telling him the body control module was fried. The engine would crank every time, no hesitation, then die within a second. Classic immobilizer cut, not a module failure.
What actually happened was that the first locksmith tried to register the key through the OBD port without pulling the module first. On an all-keys-lost job for this generation of Volvo, that approach doesn't work. The module stores secured key data that has to be read directly before a new key can be written back into it. Skipping that step means the key never truly registers, no matter how many times you run the procedure.
I pulled the body control module and read it on the bench with my programmer. Once I had the secured data, I generated the correct key profile, wrote it back, reinstalled the module, and completed the pairing through the diagnostic port. Three consecutive clean starts. I walked him through what the programmer screen was showing so he could see the key sitting in memory as an active entry.
He'd already lost money to the first guy. I didn't make that part of the conversation. I just made sure the job was done right and that he left with a working key. He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a number that made him feel like he was buying a used car. He paid me a fraction of that.
