A customer in Del Mar had just picked up a used 2010 Volvo V50 at an estate sale. Well maintained, one key. The family handed him a single key and told him to sort out a spare on his own. He figured a Volvo key would be expensive but the dealer quote still caught him off guard.
The dealer wanted $395 for a spare with programming. He called me and asked if that was typical. I told him it was typical for a Volvo dealer, but I do the same job for around $185 because my overhead is a van, not a service department.
I met him and used my VVDI2 to read the transponder data from his working key and prepare a new chip. His V50 uses a transponder blade key, FCC ID KR55WK49250, with a 5-button remote. I cut the blade on my machine and synced the remote in one visit. I explained the difference between add-a-key and all-keys-lost so he'd understand why having a spare saves him serious money down the road.
He left with two working keys for less than the dealer wanted for one. On a Volvo, AKL often requires pulling the CEM module for bench work, which costs significantly more. A spare now is the cheapest protection against an expensive emergency later.
