GM's immobilizer system is the reason your key costs more than a house key. Every Chevrolet since the early 2000s has a transponder chip embedded in the key or fob. When you turn the ignition or press the start button, the car sends a radio signal to that chip. If the chip responds with the right security code, the engine starts. If not, you get a "service theft deterrent" message and nothing happens. That's why you can't just copy a Chevy key at the hardware store.
A customer at the Walmart near Peach Hill neighborhood thought only the dealer could program that chip. She had a 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo and needed a spare.
