Mazda key programming isn't a dealer-only procedure. It hasn't been for years on most models. The car's immobilizer checks the transponder chip through a coil in the ignition or proximity antennas on push-to-start models. Programming means telling the immobilizer to accept one more chip or fob code. I do it through OBD with a cable and a diagnostic computer.

A vintage furniture dealer at the flea market lot in Ventura on a Saturday afternoon was certain her 2005 Mazda Tribute needed the dealer for a new key. She'd been told by the salesperson who sold her the car that smart keys were "dealer-locked." That information was wrong when she heard it.

What if I need a Mazda key after hours or on the weekend?▼

Most Mazda dealer service departments close by 5 PM and are closed on Sundays.
