1998 Acura CL
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How does mobile remote replacement work for my CL?

You call, give me the year, make, model, and VIN, and I confirm the right fob for your car before I head out. When I arrive, I verify ownership, match the replacement to the factory fob ID for your vehicle, and go through the programming sequence on site.

Q: What do I need to have ready when you show up?

Your vehicle, a valid photo ID, and proof of ownership such as your registration or title. I pull the VIN from the dash or door jamb to confirm the correct key specs for your CL. Ownership verification is standard practice and it protects you as much as it protects me. Have those three things ready and we can get started the moment I arrive.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can it actually be programmed to my 1998 CL, or did I waste my money?

Depends on whether the fob matches the factory FCC ID and part number for your car. The 1998 CL has a specific remote, and aftermarket fobs that don't match that spec may not pair correctly no matter what you try. If the fob you bought does match, the programming on this generation can often be done through an onboard sequence, meaning you don't necessarily need a dealer or a high-end tool to pair it.

Q: My CL remote range has gotten really short. It only works from a few feet away now. Is the fob dying?

Usually it's the CR2025 going low before it fully dies. A weak cell doesn't cut out all at once, it just shrinks the range gradually until you're basically pressing the button with the fob touching the door handle. Swap the battery first. If range is still short after a fresh CR2025, check whether the fob housing has a crack at the seam.

1998 Acura CL Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out near Fanita Ranch, a woman called about her 1998 Acura CL. The remote had stopped working, and she assumed the whole thing needed replacing. She'd already called the dealer and got a quote that made her pause long enough to look for another option.

When I pulled up, she handed me the fob. The CR2025 inside was original, which on a car this age means it had been in there a long time. I swapped the cell, reseated it, and tested. Nothing. The contacts inside the housing were corroded enough that even a fresh battery wasn't making solid contact. Cleaned them up, reseated the battery, and it came back.

She stood in her driveway watching me test lock and unlock from across the car. Trunk release worked. Everything worked.

She mentioned she'd told herself she'd deal with it later for about eight months. The fix took less time than the drive to the dealer would have. She saved a good chunk over what they quoted, and she didn't have to leave her neighborhood.

That's the job a lot of the time on these older remotes. Not a big complicated programming sequence. Just the right hands on it and the right small fix done right there.

Acura CL Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I need to bring my 1998 Acura CL somewhere for key or remote replacement?▼

No. I come to you. Whether you're parked in your driveway off Fanita Ranch or stuck in a lot somewhere in Santee, I bring everything needed: replacement fob, fresh battery, contact cleaning tools, and programming equipment if the job calls for it. Acura dealers will want the car at their service bay, and if you're down to no working remote, that can mean a tow.
