A woman flagged me down near the border crossing area in San Ysidro. She had her 1999 Acura CL in a lot nearby and the ignition had been giving her grief for weeks. The key would go in, but turning it felt like arm wrestling. Some mornings it would stick on the way out and she'd sit there working it loose.
A shop had already told her the whole ignition assembly needed to come out. New cylinder, new keys, full reprogram. She wanted a second opinion before committing to that.
I pulled out the cylinder on site. Two wafers were worn almost completely flat. Not a failed lock, just wear. Twenty-five years of the same key going in the same way will do that. I decoded the existing cylinder, swapped the worn wafers, and cut a new key matched to the repaired lock. The cylinder went back in. Key slid in and turned like it was new.
Her remote fob was still paired and working. Nothing needed to be touched there. The ignition fix had nothing to do with the remote system.
She told me the other shop's quote was for parts she never needed. I showed her the old wafers side by side with the new ones so she could see the difference herself. The whole job was done in the parking lot, no tow, no dealer visit. She drove out of San Ysidro that afternoon without fighting her own ignition for the first time in months.
