The remote flip key is the blade-and-fob combo your 2010 S5 uses. Press the button on the side and the key blade swings out so you can insert it into the ignition. But the part most people don't think about is the transponder chip embedded in the key head. That chip has nothing to do with the remote buttons. It communicates directly with the immobilizer when the blade is in the ignition. The car sends out a low-frequency signal, the chip responds with its programmed code, and only if the code checks out does the system allow the engine to start. A perfectly cut blade with a blank or mismatched chip won't start this car. The immobilizer just sits there and says no.

That's why buying a cheap key online and cutting it yourself doesn't finish the job. The blade is only half of it.

Second, parts arrival and programming are two separate appointments. The key showing up at the dealership does not mean you're getting programmed that same day. You get slotted into the service schedule, which could be days out.

Third, the programming itself requires the dealer's diagnostic software running with live server access. If the immobilizer sync doesn't cooperate during that session, the job stalls. Owners on Audi forums have posted about arriving for a routine key programming and leaving two hours later with nothing working, told to come back.

What takes me 30 to 45 minutes in the Las Americas Area parking lot becomes a multi-day, multi-trip event at the dealer.

Even if the battery tests okay on a voltmeter, load it properly with a fresh one because these fobs drop out before the voltage reading looks alarming. Also check that the battery contacts aren't corroded or bent slightly outward from a previous swap.

If a fresh CR2032 seated correctly doesn't bring the buttons back, then the fob itself may have taken damage, a cracked circuit board from a drop being the most common cause on these. That's when it makes sense to talk about a replacement and reprogram.

I bought a replacement flip key online for my 2010 S5. Can I program it myself at home?

No. The 2010 S5 does not have an onboard self-programming sequence for the transponder or the remote on this key type. There is no ignition-turn cycle or button combination that will enroll a new key. Programming requires diagnostic equipment that communicates through the OBD port to read the vehicle's immobilizer data and write the new key into the system.

The key you bought online can still be used. Bring it to me and I cut the blade to your vehicle and program the chip and remote on site. You just won't be finishing that part in your driveway without the right tools.
