Out in the Richland area of San Marcos, a mountain biker called me from a trailhead parking lot. He'd taken his only key out on the ride in his jersey pocket. Somewhere on the trail it was gone. He'd checked the lot, retraced a stretch of the path, nothing. His S5 was just sitting there and he had no way in, no spare at home, and no interest in waiting for a dealer appointment plus a tow.

I drove out to the lot. First thing was getting into the car without breaking anything. I used a pick tool suited to the Audi door cylinder to decode the lock mechanically, reading the wafer positions inside and translating that into exact cut depths for a new blade. No damage to the lock, no drilling.

Then came the heavier part of the job. All-keys-lost on a 2011 S5 means the immobilizer has no recognized key in memory to lean on. I connected through the OBD port, read the PIN data from the immobilizer, and ran the all-keys-lost sequence. That process clears every previously registered key from the system and registers the new one as the primary. It takes longer than a simple spare-key add because there's a timed handshake built into the sequence that you just have to let run.

The new smart key was cut, programmed, and tested before I packed up. Car started in the same dirt lot where he'd been standing with a dead phone and no plan. He mentioned the dealer had been his first thought and that a tow alone would have eaten most of his afternoon. Getting a spare cut before you need it is always the smarter move, but when all-keys-lost happens, it's a recoverable situation on site.
