2018 BMW 2 Series
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How do I know you are not a scam locksmith?

Fair question, and BMW owners get targeted more than most. Ask before anyone rolls: get the company name, a license number, and a firm price for your specific vehicle over the phone. If the number changes when they pull up, that is your answer. Scam operations quote low to get you to commit, then inflate it in the driveway when you are already stuck.

Q: Will the replacement key work exactly like my original?

Yes. We program the replacement so the immobilizer authorizes the engine to start, and we set up the remote functions so lock, unlock, and any comfort access features your specific 2018 2 Series trim has are fully operational. We also cut the emergency blade to your vehicle so you have that backup option working too. We test everything on site before we pack up.

Q: My 2018 BMW 2 Series is showing a key warning on the dash even though I have the key with me. What does that mean?

A key-not-detected warning while you are holding the fob usually points to one of a few things: a weak or dying fob battery, a corroded battery contact inside the fob, or a communication issue between the fob and the vehicle's receiver. On the 2018 2 Series, the fob battery going low does not always give you a clean warning before it starts causing problems.

Q: Can I buy a replacement BMW fob online and have you program it?

Sometimes, but it depends on the source and the condition of the fob. The 2018 BMW 2 Series requires the replacement fob to be a blank that is compatible with your vehicle's specific immobilizer generation. Some aftermarket fobs sold online are not, and some used fobs pulled from donor cars come with their own programming history that complicates the process. If you already have something in hand, call me and describe it before I come out.

2018 BMW 2 Series Emergency Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

She had just come from a medical appointment in Otay Mesa. Not a routine checkup. The kind where you sit in the car for a few minutes before you can drive. She had a pharmacy stop to make before it closed and she needed to get home.

Her 2018 BMW 2 Series would not start. The push-button gave her nothing. She had tried holding the fob to the button, which is the right instinct, but the fob battery had been dying for a while and the contact inside had corroded to the point where the backup signal was not getting through. She found my number and called.

I was already in the Nestor area, so I got to her in the medical center lot in about twenty minutes.

The door was not a problem once I had the emergency blade out of the fob. I connected my diagnostic equipment to the OBD port, read what the vehicle security system was showing, and confirmed the fob needed to be replaced and reprogrammed rather than just having the battery swapped. The corrosion had taken out one of the internal contacts.

New fob, programmed on site, tested every function before I closed my kit. From her phone call to the engine running was just under an hour.

The BMW service department had already closed for the day. Even if she had waited until morning, she would have been looking at a tow, a loaner request, and a bill she was not prepared for. She made it to the pharmacy with time to spare.

Some jobs are just a job. This one felt like it mattered to get right and get done fast.

BMW 2 Series Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Are you licensed and insured to work on BMW vehicles?▼

Yes. EZ Car Keyz is licensed by the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, the state agency that regulates locksmiths. We carry full liability insurance and hold NASTF Vehicle Security Professional credentials, which means we have passed the background checks required to access vehicle security data for BMW and other manufacturers. That matters on a 2018 BMW 2 Series because the key programming process involves the vehicle's immobilizer and body control systems.
