A call came in from Rolling Hills Ranch on a Sunday afternoon. A man had driven over from that side of Chula Vista to meet family, parked the LHS, and somewhere between getting out and walking to the front door, the remote fob vanished. The ignition key was still on him, so he could get back in and drive, but the remote was gone and he was bothered enough to want it handled that day.
He had already looked up the factory FCC ID and found the fob online for a few dollars. What he did not know was that buying the hardware is only part of it. A replacement remote for this generation Chrysler still needs to be paired to the car. You cannot just swap it in.
I met him at the vehicle. The 1995 LHS uses an onboard programming sequence for the remote, which is one of the things I actually like about these older Chryslers. No scan tool required, no dealer portal, no waiting on a subscription service. The procedure is done through the car itself, cycling the ignition in a specific sequence to put the system into its remote-learning mode, then transmitting from each fob you want registered. The car confirms each one. Quick and clean.
I programmed a fresh remote on site and walked him through the button functions. Trunk release, lock, unlock, all working. The whole visit was under 20 minutes. He mentioned the dealer told him to come in during the week and plan on leaving it. That was not going to work for him anyway.
