People lose all their Chrysler keys more often than you'd think. The most common scenario isn't dramatic. They just never got a second key. They bought the minivan used with one FOBIK, always planned to get a spare, and two years later that FOBIK finally gives out.
A newly divorced mom at a townhouse complex in Del Mar had exactly that story. Her only FOBIK to her 1997 Chrysler LHS cracked at the housing seam and the blade snapped when she tried to insert it in the ignition. The FOBIK was in two pieces and the car wouldn't start. Zero working keys and a minivan she couldn't drive.
I used my VVDI2 to read the transponder data from the cracked FOBIK, since the chip was still intact inside the broken housing. That saved time because I didn't need to run a full all-keys-lost procedure. I decoded her door lock, cut two fresh blades, and built two new FOBIKs. Her key uses FCC ID GQ43VT7T, a 3-button FOBIK that I rebuilt into new shells with the cloned chip data. I showed her the chip from the cracked FOBIK so she could see it was still good.
She went from zero working keys to two in about 40 minutes. Total was around $106. A full AKL without the broken pieces would have cost more, and the dealer wanted $222 either way. If you still have the pieces, bring them. The chip data inside a cracked FOBIK is often perfectly fine.
