Over at Ferry Landing in Coronado, I got a call from someone who'd been clicking their 1996 LHS fob for two days with nothing happening. No lock, no unlock, no trunk release.
The ignition key was still working fine and the car started every time, so the job wasn't urgent in the way an all-keys-lost situation is. But a fob that does nothing gets annoying fast, especially when you're carrying groceries to a trunk you can't pop from the driveway.
I pulled up expecting a battery issue. The CR2016 was the original from who knows when, basically reading empty. Swapped it out right there in the parking lot, tested range in all directions, confirmed lock, unlock, and trunk were all responding cleanly.
Still nothing after the fresh battery. That told me the remote had lost its pairing with the vehicle. On a 1996 LHS, reprogramming the fob to the car is an onboard procedure - no OBD port, no laptop, no diagnostic equipment needed. I ran through the sequence, the system accepted the remote, and we tested it until the owner was satisfied with the range from a reasonable distance.
The whole job was done on site in the Ferry Landing lot. The dealer route for something like this on an older Chrysler often means dropping the car off and waiting, which made no sense here. A quick mobile call and it was sorted before lunch.
