La Mesa Village has a pretty active parking lot scene on weekends, and that is exactly where I took this call.
A guy had parked near the shops, come back out, and his 2007 Freestyle would not respond to the fob at all. The key would turn in the ignition and the car would start, so the transponder side was still alive, but the remote buttons were completely dead. Lock, unlock, nothing. He had already swapped the CR2032 before calling me, which is always the right first move, so that ruled out the easy answer.
He mentioned he had called another number first. Someone quoted him a low flat rate on the phone, showed up, spent about twenty minutes at the car, and left telling him the key needed to be replaced entirely. It did not get replaced. When I pulled up, I went through the remote head key properly. The transponder registration was clean, but the remote side had not been fully paired during whatever the previous guy ran. That is the thing with a remote head key on this generation of Ford: the chip programming and the remote pairing are two separate procedures, and if you only complete one of them, you get a key that half-works. Which is exactly what he had.
I ran both procedures, confirmed all three buttons were responding at range, verified a clean start, and that was it. Done in the parking lot, no tow, no dealer appointment, no waiting a week for a parts order.
He said the dealer had quoted him a significant wait time and a price that would have made him wince. He paid a fraction of that standing in a parking lot in La Mesa Village on a Saturday afternoon.
