There's a trade school off the main drag in San Luis Rey, and I got a call from a student there on a Tuesday morning. He had a lab exam at three in the afternoon and his Ioniq wasn't responding to the fob at all. No lock, no unlock, the car just sat there ignoring him.
He'd already called the nearest Hyundai dealer. Friday was the first available appointment. They also mentioned they'd need to verify fob inventory before confirming anything. It was Tuesday. He had a lab exam in five hours.
I pulled into the lot and he was standing next to the car looking at the fob like it had personally let him down. I checked the fob first -- the CR2032 was reading low, which can cause exactly this kind of intermittent dropout on the Ioniq's smart system, where the car doesn't get a clean enough signal to respond. Swapped the battery, tested. Still not pairing cleanly. Time to go to the port.
I connected my diagnostic equipment to the OBD port and ran the smart key registration sequence. The Ioniq's immobilizer needs the fob to be properly enrolled -- you can't shortcut it with a button sequence on this system. New fob registered, all four buttons tested, start confirmed.
He was back inside for his exam with time to spare. The dealer's Friday appointment was no longer his problem.
