2018 Hyundai Ioniq Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Over in Otay Mesa West, I got a call from a woman trying to sort out a spare key for her dad. He had a 2018 Ioniq hybrid, lived alone, and the situation was simple: one key, no backup.
He hadn't been on a freeway in years, and the nearest Hyundai dealer was a straight highway run he wasn't going to make. His daughter had been trying to line up a dealer appointment for months and couldn't make the timing work around his schedule.
I pulled up to the house that morning. He met me at the driveway in slippers, which told me everything about how this visit was going to go.
The Ioniq's smart key system meant I needed my diagnostic interface in the OBD port to register the new fob to the vehicle. I confirmed the powertrain, pulled the security data I needed, and got to work. He stood next to me the whole time watching the laptop screen like he was half-expecting it not to work. It did. Both new fobs came up registered, the push-button start recognized each one, and I walked him through swapping the coin-cell battery so he'd know what that process looks like before he ever needed it.
His daughter pulled up right as I was finishing. She'd rushed over thinking she'd need to be there for the whole thing. She missed it by about ten minutes.
He saved a meaningful amount over what the dealer had quoted for a single key, and he didn't leave his driveway to do it.
