2022 Hyundai Ioniq
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long does smart key programming actually take once you're at my car?

For a spare key on a 2022 Ioniq where one working fob is present, the programming portion runs well under 30 minutes once I'm connected. If all keys are lost, the process takes a bit longer because the security module requires a timed access window before it allows new key registration - that wait is built into the system and can't be skipped, but it's still under an hour total. Either way, you're not sitting around for half a day.

Q: Can you get to me faster than a dealer appointment?

Almost always, yes. Dealers schedule key work around parts availability and bay time, and for newer vehicles like the 2022 Ioniq that can mean days out. I carry Ioniq-compatible smart key blanks and the equipment to program them on every call. One visit, same day, done at your location near Bay Marina or wherever you're parked in National City. No tow required, no waiting room.

Q: My 2022 Ioniq shows a key-not-detected warning but the fob battery is new. What's going on?

A fresh battery fixes most of these, but not all of them. A few things to check before assuming the fob is dead or needs reprogramming. First, make sure the replacement CR2032 is seated flat against both contacts. If the tray got bent slightly during a swap, the battery can look installed but have a weak or intermittent connection.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online that matches the factory FCC ID on my Ioniq. Can I program it myself?

No. The fob is just hardware until it's registered to your car's security module. On a 2022 Ioniq, that registration requires professional diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port - there's no onboard self-programming sequence for smart key vehicles this generation. The fob you bought online is fine to use as the hardware, but it still needs to be programmed. Bring it to me and I'll handle the registration.

2022 Hyundai Ioniq Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

She was parked near the water over in Bay Marina, National City, and she had already done her research. Three different sources told her the 2022 Ioniq was dealer-only for key programming. A forum post, the dealer's own service page, and someone at work. She believed all of them right up until I pulled up.

The job was a spare smart key. She had one working fob, wanted a second, and the dealer had quoted her a wait plus a price that made her keep putting it off. A coworker finally told her to just call a mobile locksmith.

I met her in the parking lot during a lunch break. The 2022 Ioniq uses a proximity-based smart key system - the vehicle's security module communicates with the fob through antennas built into the door handles and the interior, and adding a second key means registering it with that module through the OBD port. I connected my diagnostic equipment under the dash, pulled the security access needed, and went through the immobilizer registration sequence. Then I verified every function on the new fob before she even put her coffee down. Touch unlock on both front handles, start authorization, trunk release - everything.

She had two working keys before she went back inside. The dealer comparison came up at the end, almost as an afterthought. She'd been putting this off for weeks because she thought it had to be a whole production. It wasn't.

Hyundai Ioniq Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a replacement Ioniq smart key after hours or on the weekend?▼

Call us. Hyundai dealer service departments run limited hours, and weekends are a real problem if you're stuck without a working key. The 2022 Ioniq isn't the kind of car you leave sitting for three days waiting for a Monday appointment. We work nights and weekends in National City and the Bay Marina area, same tools, same result as any other day.
