I got a call from a woman in Winter Gardens, out in Lakeside, whose Palisade was sitting in her driveway showing a key warning on the dash. She said the fob had worked fine that morning and then just stopped being recognized by mid-afternoon. No 12V work had been done, no battery swap, nothing obvious.
When I got there I asked her to show me the fob she had been using. She pulled it out of her bag and I could see it had been rattling around loose with keys and coins. Not great for any electronics, but the first thing I did was open the fob housing and check the CR2450. Cell was the right type, seated correctly, contact looked clean. So the battery was fine.
What I found was that the internal board had taken enough small impacts that one of the button contacts was not making clean contact anymore. The fob looked whole from the outside but it was not sending a consistent signal. The dash warning was real, not a glitch.
I connected to the OBD port, read the PIN from the immobilizer, and programmed a fresh fob to the vehicle. The old fob got wiped out of the system in the same session so it cannot start the car if it ever turns up again or if someone finds it. After programming I walked the Palisade doing the full test: every one of the seven buttons, range check from across the driveway, and three consecutive starts to confirm the immobilizer was reading clean each time.
She asked why I was doing all that. I told her five extra minutes of testing is what separates a key that works today from one that strands you again in a week. She nodded and said the dealer had just handed her a fob the last time she needed work done and sent her home without checking anything.
She saved a good chunk going this route, and she did not have to arrange a tow or sit in a waiting room.
