Second, the low-frequency antennas inside the cabin and in the door handles can develop faults. If the car can't hear the fob approaching, the handle won't wake up and the start button won't see the key. You can test this by holding the fob directly against the start button to bypass the proximity antenna -- if it starts that way but not from your pocket, the antenna circuit is worth checking.

Third, the fob itself can have a failed internal component even with a good battery. The transponder and the RF transmitter are separate elements inside the housing.
