Over in East Lemon Grove, near a physical therapy office, a retired judge called me about his 2013 Jaguar XF. He was recovering from a hip replacement and using a walker. His aide had the day off. The nearest Jaguar dealer was across town, and getting there was not a reasonable option -- not for someone doing physical therapy and working around a walker.

He could still get into the car using the emergency blade in the fob handle, but the vehicle security system would not recognize the fob to allow starting. When I pulled the fob open, the CR2032 had leaked. There was corrosion across the battery contact and some residue on the board near the terminal. I cleaned the board carefully, replaced the battery with a name-brand cell, and then connected through the OBD port to re-register the fob to the vehicle's key module. Ran through full function testing -- lock, unlock, the remaining buttons, start -- everything came back.
Before I packed up, I showed him exactly what the compartment should look like clean and what early corrosion looks like so he would catch it before it became a bigger problem.
He did not have to leave the building. The dealer quote, when he had called earlier that week, was more than what he paid me -- and that was before factoring in how he was supposed to get there.
