2000 Mazda MPV
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How much harder is it to replace the key if I've lost all copies?

Not much harder on this van, honestly. Because the 2000 MPV uses a plain metal key, all-keys-lost is still a mechanical job. A locksmith decodes the lock cylinder directly and cuts a new key to match. There's no immobilizer reset, no two-key requirement, no security wait timer. The main difference from duplicating a key you still have is just a few extra minutes for the decoding step. Get a spare cut while you're at it.

Q: Are aftermarket keys fine for the 2000 Mazda MPV, or should I stick with OEM?

For this van, aftermarket is a non-issue in the way it would be for a newer vehicle. You're not dealing with a chip or a fob that needs to talk to the car's electronics. The key just needs to be cut accurately to the right profile for this lock. The quality of the key blank matters mainly for durability.

Q: Can a locksmith make a key for my 2000 MPV on the spot, or do I need to bring it somewhere?

On the spot, at your location. That's the whole point of calling a mobile locksmith for a job like this. The 2000 MPV key is a metal key cut to the vehicle. I carry the equipment to decode a lock and cut a key right there at the curb, in a parking lot, at your apartment complex near CSUSM, wherever the van is sitting. No tow, no shop visit required.

Q: My 2000 MPV key turns hard in the ignition. Do I need a new key or is something else going on?

Could be a few things. A worn key is the first thing to check. If the key has been used for years and the cuts are rounding off, it may still turn but with more resistance than it should. A duplicate made from that worn key will usually be just as bad or worse, because you're copying the wear into the new one.

2000 Mazda MPV Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a student over near CSUSM on a Tuesday afternoon. She'd locked her only key inside her 2000 Mazda MPV while loading up gear for a move. The van was sitting in a lot off Twin Oaks Valley Road, and she had class in an hour.

She'd already called a tow company. They told her the van would need to go to a dealer, and the wait was looking like two days minimum. She called them back to cancel after a friend told her to try a mobile locksmith first.

I was already in San Marcos. Drove straight to her.

She seemed surprised when I told her there was no programming, no module work, no waiting on a part to ship. On this van, the key is a metal key. Get into the car, decode the lock, cut the key. That's it.

She made her class. The dealer comparison didn't even come up until she texted me later to say she'd told her roommate. The roommate had paid a lot more for a lot less on a different car recently. I just let that land without commenting.

Mazda MPV Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace the key for a 2000 Mazda MPV?▼

Call a mobile locksmith. On this specific van, the key is a standard metal key, which puts it in the most affordable replacement category there is. There's no chip to program, no fob to pair, no module work involved. A locksmith comes to you, decodes or references the key code, and cuts a replacement on site. No tow, no dealer appointment, no waiting on parts.
