It was a Tuesday night in San Ysidro, right off the Border Area stretch near the port of entry. A woman called about her 2001 Mazda MPV sitting in a parking lot. She had one key, it snapped off in the door lock, and the broken piece was still in the cylinder.

When I got there I could see the tip of the blade sitting just inside the lock face. I extracted it, checked the cylinder for damage, and then decoded the remaining key stub to get the cut. That part matters on a mechanical key job. The cut on the stub told me everything I needed to build a new key blade on the spot. I cut two replacements, tested both in the door and the ignition, and made sure neither one was binding anywhere.
She asked if I needed to do anything with the computer. I told her this one is a metal key, so once it's cut right, it works.
She drove off with two good keys. The dealer would have told her to come back in the morning, wait for a parts order, and pay for a full service appointment. We wrapped it up under the lot lights in about 40 minutes.
