2002 Mazda MPV
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Is a locksmith cheaper than going to the Mazda dealer for this van?

On a 2002 MPV, the gap is real. The dealer has overhead, service writer fees, and minimum labor charges that get applied whether the job warrants them or not. A mechanical key replacement is one of the faster jobs a locksmith does - cut a blank to the vehicle, test it, done. Dealers often can't match that turnaround either, especially if they need to order the blank.

Q: Does your price include the cutting and everything else?

Yes. One price, everything in it: the key blank, cutting to your vehicle, and testing before I leave. On a 2002 MPV there's no programming, no module work, no separate fees for things that don't apply. What you hear on the phone is what you pay.

Q: I have one working key for my 2002 MPV. Should I get a spare made now or wait until it breaks?

Get the spare now. This is one of those situations where having a working key to decode from makes the job faster and cheaper. When I can read a working key directly, cutting a duplicate is quick. If you wait until that last key breaks or gets lost, I'm decoding from the lock cylinder instead, which is a longer process.

Q: My 2002 MPV key is worn and sometimes doesn't turn cleanly. Can you cut a new one from the old key, or do you need the lock?

Worn key as the source is risky. If the cuts are rounded or the key has been copied before, duplicating it can carry the wear forward and the new key may work no better than the old one. The right move is decoding from the lock cylinder or pulling the key code another way, then cutting a fresh key to the original spec.

2002 Mazda MPV Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

She was in Fanita Ranch when it happened. Her purse got snatched at the outlet area in Santee - keys, wallet, phone, gone. She borrowed a stranger's phone to call her husband, then the police, then me.

The 2002 Mazda MPV was sitting in their garage with zero keys to it. Her husband had already called the Mazda dealer. They told him they could help, but it would take several business days to source the right blank, plus they wanted the van towed in. The estimate they threw out made him pause.

I got there that evening. The job itself was simpler than the day she'd had. The 2002 MPV uses a mechanical key - no chip enrollment, no module access, no sequences. I decoded the lock cylinder to pull the key code and cut two keys on site. Tested both in the ignition and both doors. They worked on the first try.

She drove home that night. The dealer option would have meant a tow, a wait, and a bill that didn't make sense for what the job actually is. I got her back on the road before the police finished their report.

Mazda MPV Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How much does a 2002 Mazda MPV key replacement cost?▼

Call us for the exact number, but it's a fraction of what the dealer route costs. The 2002 MPV uses a mechanical key - no chip, no programming labor, no diagnostic session to bill you for. Dealers tend to bundle in labor charges that don't apply to a job this simple. With us, one price covers the blank, the cut, and mobile service to your location in Santee. No separate line items.
