2009 Mazda RX-8 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A guy over in Richland, San Marcos called me about his 2009 RX-8. He'd bought it used and inherited one fob. That was his only key. It had been fine until one morning the car threw a key-not-detected warning and he was late getting somewhere.
He'd already tried a new battery. Said he was careful about it, too. Still nothing reliable.
I pulled up to his place with the fob sitting on the center console where he'd left it in frustration. He seemed a little sheepish about the whole thing, like maybe he'd caused it somehow.
I checked the fob first. The battery he'd installed was actually a CR2032 instead of the correct CR2025. Close enough to fit, not close enough to seat right. The contact wasn't making clean connection. Swapped in the proper cell, reseated it, and the car saw the fob immediately.
We weren't done though. Since he only had one key and had been meaning to get a spare anyway, I cut and programmed a second fob on site through the OBD port. He's got two working keys now and knows where to find a CR2025 when the time comes.
The dealer quote he'd gotten earlier just for a spare had been enough to make him put it off for a year. He said he wished he hadn't waited.
