I got a call from someone parked in the Poway Business Park, over near one of the industrial units off Scripps Poway Parkway. His 2010 RX-8 had been sitting in a covered parking space since the night before. The fob had stopped working that morning and he was standing next to the car with a dead push-button start and no idea why.
He'd already tried the one thing most people try: new battery. CR2025, fresh from the pharmacy. Still nothing. The dash was showing a key-not-detected warning every time he held the fob near the start button. He said the dealer told him to get it towed in and plan for at least a day, maybe two if parts needed to be ordered.
I walked over from the street with my bag.
First thing I did was pull the fob apart and check his battery install. It was fine, seated correctly. So I connected through the OBD port and ran a read on the immobilizer side. What I found was that the fob had simply dropped its registration. This happens. It's not dramatic. The car's security system just loses its handshake with the key, and no amount of battery swapping brings that back because the problem isn't power, it's the pairing.
I registered the existing fob back to the car, verified the transponder chip was communicating cleanly, and tested every button. Lock, unlock, trunk release, and the panic. All four working. Push-button start confirmed.
The whole thing was done in the parking structure without moving the car once. He'd been quoted a tow plus a full day at the dealer. He was driving before lunch.
