Out in Ramona Highlands, the avocado rows go on longer than you'd expect. No cell signal for stretches, gravel access roads between trees, and no flatbed is navigating that comfortably. A farm manager texted me a GPS pin from one of those roads. His 2011 Mazda RX-8 was sitting there, fob dead, and the manual door lock cylinder wasn't responding. A previous owner had disabled it somewhere along the line, so the emergency blade was useless for entry.
I loaded up for the RX-8 and drove out to that pin.
When I got there, the car was exactly where he said it would be, parked between two rows of trees with dust still settling around it. I decoded the lock mechanically, cut a replacement blade on site, and handled the smart key programming through the OBD port with my equipment. The two-key minimum the system requires meant I had to have both fobs enrolled before the car would cooperate. It took a little longer than a single-key add job, but we finished it on that gravel road without moving the car an inch.
He mentioned a dealer had given him a number and a timeline that started with "we'd need the car towed in first." That alone would have been a production from where we were standing.
The RX-8 started. He drove it out of those avocado rows under its own power.
