A smog shop in Downtown La Mesa called me in to clean up somebody else's mess. Their customer had brought in a 2012 Juke with a key problem, a different locksmith had already attempted an all-keys-lost job on it, and somewhere in the middle of the programming sequence the car battery sagged and dropped out. The other tech packed up and left.
By the time I got there, the immobilizer was sitting in a fault state. The vehicle wouldn't recognize the new fob, wouldn't recognize anything. The smog shop owner was just staring at it.
First thing I did was clamp my jump pack to the battery to hold steady voltage. That part matters more than most people realize. A power dip mid-sequence on these Jukes can leave the security module in a state where it won't accept a new registration until you clear the fault first. You can't just restart the programming and hope.
I cleared the fault codes through the OBD port, let the module reset fully, then ran a clean programming sequence from scratch. The fob learned on the first attempt. The whole recovery took about an hour and a half, which is longer than a normal job, but that's what a botched prior attempt costs in time.
I walked the smog shop guys through what had happened so they'd recognize it if it ever came up again. The customer got his car back the same afternoon. The dealer wasn't part of this story at all, which was the point.
