Over in Fletcher Hills in El Cajon, I got a call from a guy who works nights. He had a 2017 Juke and a key situation that he described as "the car is haunted."
What was actually happening: he had gone to another locksmith a couple weeks earlier after losing his original key. That locksmith made him something, it worked well enough to drive home, and then it started falling apart over the next eight days. Some mornings the push-button start would fire right up. Some evenings it would sit there with a key-not-detected warning on the dash, and he'd be pressing the fob against the start button trying the backup start method, wondering if he was doing it wrong.
He figured it was an electrical gremlin. Maybe a bad ground. He had a shop look at it and they found nothing wrong with the car itself.
I got there and the problem was the key, not the Juke. The fob that was made for him had the wrong transponder chip inside. On Nissan's immobilizer system, a mismatched chip can pass the initial registration process but then fail verification once the vehicle runs its full security check across several start cycles. It doesn't blow up on day one. It erodes. That's why the car "worked" for a week and then got unreliable.
I read the chip in the bad fob with my diagnostic equipment right there in the parking lot, confirmed it was the wrong type for this vehicle, and programmed a new fob with the correct chip matched to this Juke's immobilizer. I also pulled the CR2032 out of his old fob and it was sitting weak. New battery, new fob, tested lock, unlock, and three consecutive cold starts.
He asked me if I was sure it would keep working. I told him to call me in a month if it didn't. He never called.
The dealer comparison wasn't even part of the conversation. He was just relieved someone figured out what was actually wrong.
