1996 Pontiac Firebird
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

1996 Pontiac Firebird Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy parked near the village in Del Mar. He had a 1996 Firebird, the kind you don't see much anymore, and his only key had snapped. Not lost. Broken. Half of it was still in his pocket and the other half was sitting in the door lock cylinder.

That's the version of this job that takes a little more patience. I had to extract the broken piece from the cylinder before anything else could happen. The cylinder on these cars is accessible once you know the approach, and the fragment came out clean without damaging the tumblers.

After that it was a standard cut. I decoded the lock right there in the parking lot, cut a new blade to match, and tested it in the door and ignition both. The whole thing took maybe forty minutes.

He'd already called the dealer before he called me. They told him he'd need to tow it in, which he wasn't going to do to a car he cared about, and that they'd need to look at whether the cylinder needed replacing. That conversation alone would have cost him a day and a real chunk of money. We handled it on the street, same afternoon.
