1998 Pontiac Firebird
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: I need a replacement key for my 1998 Firebird but I have no working key to copy. Can you still make one?

Yes. This is one of the easier all-keys-lost situations to handle because the key is purely mechanical. We can decode the lock cylinder directly or pull the key code through other means and cut a working key from scratch. No diagnostic port, no programming sequence, no waiting on a dealer to look up codes. The job gets done on site, at the car, wherever it is parked in Chula Vista.

Q: How fast can you get to Montgomery in Chula Vista?

Average arrival is 15 to 25 minutes. We dispatch the closest available tech as soon as you call. No appointment window, no scheduling days out. Call now and someone is heading your way now.

Q: My 1998 Firebird key turns but feels rough or stiff in the ignition. Do I need a new key or a new cylinder?

Could be either, but on a car this age the cylinder is usually the bigger culprit. The tumblers in these ignition cylinders wear over decades of use, and an old worn key can actually accelerate that wear because the shallow cuts stop lifting the tumblers cleanly. A fresh key cut to the correct depth will sometimes feel smoother right away. If it still binds after a properly cut key, the cylinder itself likely needs attention.

Q: Can I just get a copy made at a hardware store for my 1998 Firebird?

Technically yes, if you have a working key to copy. Hardware store duplicators will trace whatever they see, including any wear on the original. A copy of a worn key is just another worn key, sometimes worse. If the original is already marginal, a hardware copy can end up not turning at all.

1998 Pontiac Firebird Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy over in Montgomery called about his 1998 Firebird. He had one key left, it was worn down to almost nothing, and he was nervous about it snapping off in the ignition one morning.

He had already called a dealer. They pointed him toward a locksmith. The locksmith he found first wanted him to tow the car to a shop. He was not doing that with a running car.

I pulled up, took a look at the worn key, and decoded the blade right there. Worn keys on these older ignitions can be tricky to read because the cuts are shallow from years of use, but you work with what you have and verify against the cylinder if needed.

Cut a fresh replacement on site, tested it in the ignition and both door locks. Smooth turn, no binding. He stood there and watched the whole thing, which I always prefer. Took maybe twenty minutes.

He mentioned what the dealer quote had been. I just told him to call us first next time.

Does the 1998 Pontiac Firebird key fob need a battery?▼

No fob on this one. The 1998 Firebird uses a plain metal key, no remote, no battery, no buttons. If your doors have power locks, they run off the interior switch or an optional separate keyless entry system, but the ignition key itself is strictly mechanical. Nothing to program, nothing to charge.
