1997 Pontiac Firebird
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What exactly is a mechanical key and what does the replacement process look like?

A mechanical key is a metal blade, full stop. No electronics inside, no chip to program, no pairing step. The key works because the cut pattern on the blade matches the lock and ignition cylinder. Replacement is a cutting job. I either use a key code on file for your VIN, or I decode the existing lock cylinder directly if you have no working key to copy.

Q: What if I need a replacement key after hours or on a weekend?

Call anyway. I'm available seven days a week, 6 AM to 11:30 PM, including weekends and most holidays. A lot of lockouts and broken-key situations happen at the worst times, and The Cays isn't a place I'm going to skip because it's a Saturday evening. No extra charge for evenings or weekends.

Q: My ignition feels stiff and the key doesn't turn as smoothly as it used to. Is this a key problem or a cylinder problem?

On a '97 Firebird, that's almost always the cylinder. These cars are old enough now that the ignition tumblers wear down, and a worn cylinder can feel tight, sticky, or inconsistent even with a key that's cut perfectly. Sometimes the key itself gets worn too, especially if it's been the only key for years and gets used hard every day. The way to tell: if a freshly cut key from code has the same stiffness, it's the cylinder.

Q: I lost my only key. Can you still make a replacement without anything to copy from?

Yes. Zero-key situations are normal on vehicles this age. I decode the cut directly from the door lock or ignition cylinder using a decoder tool, then cut the blade to match. No existing key required, no tow to a dealer, no waiting on a code lookup from a distant office. The car stays right where it is in The Cays and the key gets made on the spot.

1997 Pontiac Firebird Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy parked near the water in The Cays, Coronado. He had one key left for his '97 Firebird and it snapped off. Not in the lock, thankfully, but clean at the bow, so the blade was already gone by the time he found it. Just a stub in his hand and no way to start the car.

He'd already looked into the dealer route and it was going to mean a flatbed, a wait, and a bill that made him wince. He called me instead.

I pulled up with the van, decoded the lock cylinder on site, and cut a replacement blade to match. Tested it in the door, tested it in the ignition, full rotation both ways, smooth return. Done.

He stood there turning it over in his hand like he expected more to happen. That's the whole job on a mechanical key. The cut is the key. When it's right, it just works.

He saved a good chunk compared to the dealer path, and he did it without moving the car an inch.

Pontiac Firebird Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Does the 1997 Pontiac Firebird key have any buttons or a remote?▼

No. The '97 Firebird uses a straight mechanical key with no remote, no buttons, and no fob. It's a metal blade that operates the ignition and door locks directly. That's the complete key for this vehicle. If you also want keyless entry, that would have been a separate factory or aftermarket remote system, not part of the key itself.
