I got a call from a woman staying at a vacation rental in the Santaluz area of Rancho Bernardo. She was in town for a work stretch, had one key, and that key stopped communicating with the car. The remote buttons went dead and when she called the dealer they told her to tow it in and come back the next afternoon.
She found me online around 9 p.m. and asked if I was actually mobile or if that just meant I had a website.
I pulled up to the rental driveway about an hour later with everything already loaded. The 2011 Tiguan takes a remote flip key with four buttons. I carry the blank, the cutter is built into my van, and I have the programming equipment for VW on board. I checked her fob first. The CR2032 was reading low enough to kill the remote signal, but the bigger issue was that the transponder side had lost its pairing with the immobilizer, which is a known failure mode on these when the battery drains completely and voltage drops at the wrong moment.
Cut the blade from her VIN, enrolled the transponder through the OBD port, synced the remote, and tested all four buttons plus the ignition. Start, run, lock, unlock, and the flip blade folding back cleanly. Thirty minutes, give or take.
She had a second key made on the spot so she wouldn't be in the same position again. The dealer quote for one key, plus the tow, was more than I charged for two. She drove to her meeting the next morning without calling a tow truck at all.
