2013 Volkswagen Tiguan
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What exactly is a remote flip key and what makes it different from a regular key?

A remote flip key is two things in one housing. The metal blade folds into the body of the fob when you are not using it, and springs out when you press the release button. That blade goes into the ignition cylinder to start the car the traditional way. The second part is the electronics. Inside the fob head sits a transponder chip. Every time you turn the ignition, the car reads that chip.

Q: How long does the dealer typically take to replace a key for a 2013 Tiguan?

Longer than most people expect. VW dealers generally do not stock individual replacement fobs on the shelf. The key is ordered by VIN, shipped to the dealer, and then programmed once it arrives. Owners on VW forums have reported waits ranging from several days to nearly two weeks depending on parts availability at the time. Then there is a separate appointment for the programming itself. With me, the job is done in one visit.

Q: My 2013 Tiguan starts fine but the remote lock and unlock buttons stopped working. Is the key dead?

Not necessarily. If the car starts and runs normally, the transponder chip inside the fob is still enrolled and communicating with the immobilizer. That part is working. The remote functions run on the CR2032 battery in the fob. When that battery gets low, the remote range drops first, then the buttons stop registering entirely, while the transponder side keeps functioning because it draws power differently through the ignition coil.

Q: I lost both keys to my 2013 Tiguan. Can a new key still be made without any working key to copy?

Yes. All-keys-lost on this generation Tiguan is a standard job. It does require the right equipment to access the immobilizer and enroll a new key from scratch, since there is no working key to reference. The previously registered keys get cleared out of the system during that process, so any lost fobs can no longer start the vehicle. Plan for the job to take a bit longer than a simple spare key duplication.

2013 Volkswagen Tiguan Remote Flip Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out near the Garden Road Area, a middle school art teacher flagged me down after getting a dealer quote that made her do a double take. She had a 2013 Volkswagen Tiguan and wanted a spare key made.

The dealer told her she would need to order the key, wait for it to come in, then bring the car back for a programming appointment. She was looking at the better part of two weeks and a number that felt like it belonged on a car repair, not a key.

Her sister had used me before on a different vehicle and told her to call.

I met her in the parking lot that evening with the Tiguan right there. Cut the replacement blade to match the vehicle, loaded the transponder chip into the immobilizer through the diagnostic port, and paired the remote functions. The factory fob she had on her keyring stayed registered too, so she walked away with two working keys instead of one.

The part she kept coming back to was the time. She had blocked off an entire afternoon for the dealer appointment that was still two weeks out. This was done before the lot lights came on.

She got a spare key the same evening she called. That is the whole job.

Volkswagen Tiguan Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the Volkswagen dealer to get a replacement key for my 2013 Tiguan?▼

No. A mobile locksmith with the right VW-capable equipment can cut and program a remote flip key for this vehicle on site, wherever it is parked. The dealer is not the only path. What throws people off is the transponder enrollment step. The key blade alone does nothing. The chip inside the fob head has to be paired to the immobilizer before the car will run. That step requires the right diagnostic tooling, not a dealer badge.
