Your 2010 Volvo C70 uses a Smart Key with 6 buttons on the face, a CR2450 battery inside powering the proximity signal, and an emergency blade hidden in the housing for manual door entry when the battery dies. Inside is a transponder chip that the car's CEM module checks every time you press start.
A customer at home near Crest had a C70 with a worn smart key. The rubber buttons were soft and unresponsive, the shell had a hairline crack along the seam, and the emergency blade was stiff from never being used. She took it to the dealer and they quoted $546 for a full replacement. What they didn't mention was that the chip and board inside were working fine.
I met her at her garage with replacement fob shells and my HU66 Lishi for verifying the emergency blade cut. Her fob, FCC ID KR55WK49266, had the typical wear pattern I see on Volvo smart keys after six or seven years of pocket carry. I moved the working electronics into a fresh shell, replaced the buttons, and cut a new blade. I showed her the circuit board so she could see everything inside was perfectly fine.
Total was about $293. The dealer wanted $546 for a whole new fob when she only needed a shell swap.
