What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on my 2013 Volvo C70?

Call a mobile locksmith who actually knows Volvo, not someone who will attempt a generic OBD approach and leave when it does not work. The C70's immobilizer requires accessing secured module data as part of the all-keys-lost process. If that step gets skipped, the key registration fails silently and the car cranks but will not run. Dealers can handle it, but the cost is significant and you are looking at towing on top of labor if the car will not start.

Can you delete a lost or stolen key from my Volvo so it can no longer start the car?

Yes. When a full key-learning session runs on the C70, the immobilizer wipes all previously registered keys and then writes only the ones present during that session. Any key that is not physically there gets erased. Lost key, stolen key, that old spare you cannot find, none of them work after.

One thing people sometimes ask: can the manufacturer's connected services app lock out a stolen key remotely? No. Remote lock is possible through connected services, but erasing a key from the immobilizer requires the programming procedure done in person. There is no over-the-air key removal on this platform.

Does the 2013 Volvo C70 smart key have a hidden emergency blade inside it?

It does. There is a mechanical blade folded into the fob body, and the driver door has a physical lock cylinder tucked behind a small cover in the handle. Most C70 owners never touch either one until the fob battery dies at the wrong moment.

If the battery is completely dead, the car also has a passive read zone, typically marked in the center console area, where you can hold the fob close to an antenna and the immobilizer will still recognize it for starting. This is a known pattern on the C70. The remote functions and the immobilizer read operate on separate systems. The fob can transmit lock and unlock signals just fine while the transponder side, which is what the immobilizer actually reads to authorize starting, is failing to communicate. Usually this comes down to a weak battery affecting the passive read, interference near the ignition area, or a fob that has taken enough physical damage that the internal transponder component is partially separated from its contact points.

Start with a fresh CR2450. If the remote functions come back to full range and the start issue clears, the battery was it. If locks and unlocks are strong but the no-start or stall-after-start continues, bring the fob in or call me out. That points to either a transponder fault in the fob or an immobilizer enrollment issue that needs to be read and confirmed with diagnostic equipment.

The top on my C70 stopped responding right after my key started acting up. Are those connected?

They can be. The convertible top system on the C70 reads key presence as part of its authorization logic. If the immobilizer is not fully recognizing the fob, some secondary systems including the top controls can go unresponsive or throw faults as a side effect. It is not the top module failing independently. It is the car reacting to an incomplete security handshake.

Fix the key situation first. In a lot of these cases, once the fob is properly recognized again, the top controls come back without any additional work.
