I got a call in Goleta, right by Fairview Town Center, from an NSX owner who thought the car had "forgotten" the key after the battery went flat.
That part is what trips people up on these. The immobilizer memory usually stays put. What changes is voltage, and then the dash key light behavior starts looking like a bigger failure.
I met him in the lot with my diagnostic setup and a fresh chipped blank. On this 1998 NSX, it was the old-school transponder key setup, not a smart key, and not an integrated button key. I cut and added an HD106-PT style key, then checked the indicator behavior with ignition ON and key-out blink timing so we knew the immobilizer was actually seeing the chip. I also had him try the original key again after stable battery voltage was restored.
The human part was him standing there with that half-laugh people do when they have already planned a tow in their head. Once it fired and stayed running, he just nodded and said he should have called first.
Dealer route was still on his list if this turned into an immobilizer module issue, but for this one it was an on-site key and voltage problem, done where the car was parked, for way less than the trip-and-wait version. (OEM Car Key Mall)
