Got a call out to Hollister Village Plaza in Goleta for a 1999 Acura NSX that was cranking but refusing to fire. The green immobilizer light on the dash was blinking after every attempt. Owner had one key left and said it had been getting flaky over the past few weeks, sometimes starting, sometimes not.
That blinking green key indicator is the giveaway on these. The immobilizer ECU sits behind the dash and talks to the transponder through the antenna ring around the ignition cylinder. If it does not get a clean read from the ID 13 chip, the injectors stay dead. Engine cranks, fuel never comes.
I pulled her key and checked the transponder signal first. Weak but present. The T5 glass chip in these older Honda/Acura keys can degrade after 25 years of heat cycles and pocket wear, and this one was right on the edge. I cut a fresh HD106-PT blank, cloned the Megamos ID 13 chip value over, and tested start cycles on the new key. Clean fires, no blink.
Then I handed it back and asked her to try it with her full key ring attached. She had a heavy set, maybe fifteen keys, a bottle opener, a gym fob. Immobilizer light flickered on the second try. We pulled everything off except the NSX key and it fired clean again.
She left with a working spare and a lighter key ring. The whole job happened in the parking lot, no flatbed, no dealer wait, for a fraction of what the Acura store would have quoted.
