Over in Goleta near the Camino Real Marketplace, an NSX owner called me about getting a spare key. He had one original left, the 4-digit code on the blade still barely readable, and he wanted a backup before that last key wore past the point of no return.
Simple job on paper. Except it's a 30-year-old NSX.
The 1995 runs a double-sided mechanical key on an HD99-P blank. No chip, no programming, just precision on both cuts. But three decades of daily use had worn his ignition wafers down. I've read enough threads on NSXPrime and the old FAQ pages where owners describe jamming a bad copy into the cylinder and having it bind or snap off at the tip. One guy on the NSX forum described his locksmith tracing the worn original and handing back a key that opened the doors fine but froze halfway in the ignition. Classic trace-copy problem.
I cut by code off the 4-digit stamp, not by tracing the worn blade. A trace inherits every groove that's been rounded off over 30 years. A code cut gives you factory-spec depths on both sides of the X214 keyway. Aligned the blank, ran both passes, checked the profiles under magnification before it went anywhere near the car.
New key turned every lock. Both doors, trunk, glovebox, ignition. He stood there holding both keys like he was comparing their weight. Told me his dealer quoted him two days without the car just to cut a mechanical key.
He kept his NSX. I kept it under 20 minutes.
