2001 Acura NSX MECHANICAL-KEY Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
In Ventura, over in the College Area, I got a call for a 2001 Acura NSX. The owner was already halfway convinced the car had to go on a flatbed to the dealer.
He told me the key turned fine but the engine would not crank, and the green immobilizer light on the dash was blinking instead of going out. That pattern spooked him. On these second-generation NA2 NSX cars, the immobilizer is Acura's Type 1 system. Transponder chip in the key head talks to the receiver ring around the ignition cylinder, which talks to the immobilizer control unit, which handshakes with the ECM. If any part of that chain fails, no crank. Honda TSB 00-013 lays out the Type 1 logic and the specific no-start behavior when the key ID is not accepted.
I had him pull the extra keys and fobs off his ring first. Then I checked the original key's cut wear and tested transponder response. The chip was barely registering. Years of use on a T5 glass transponder will do that.
I cut a new HD106-PT blank to match the factory bitting and programmed the T5 chip through the immobilizer system using the existing registered key to initiate the add-key procedure. Verified crank and start on the new key, then retested the original so he could see exactly which one was the problem. New key fired clean every time.
He relaxed when I told him there is no battery in that key head. Nothing was going to die on the new one the way he feared. Just a solid transponder and a clean handshake, handled on site for a fraction of what the dealer quoted him.
