2001 Acura NSX Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
In Ventura, over in the Thille/Montalvo area, I got a call from an NSX owner who had already convinced himself this was going to be a dealer trip.
He said the key turned but the car wouldn't fire. The immobilizer warning light was doing its thing on the dash, and he'd been reading enough forums to know that could mean anything from a worn key to a bad receiver ring to something deeper in the vehicle security system. He wasn't wrong to be cautious. These cars don't bluff.
When I got there I had him take everything off the keyring first. Two other keys were on there, both chipped. That matters on older Acura systems. The receiver ring doesn't have the filtering a newer system does, and stray transponder signals from adjacent keys are a documented source of false no-start reads on this generation. Stripped it down to just the NSX key and tested. Still no crank.
From there I checked the key blade for wear and ran a transponder response test. The chip inside the key head was reading weak, not absent, which told me the key itself was the problem rather than the receiver ring or anything downstream. The original key had enough wear and chip fatigue that the handshake was failing under real ignition conditions even though it occasionally looked like it was communicating on a bench reader.
I cut a replacement to the vehicle and programmed the correct transponder blank for the application. First crank attempt, the car fired. I went back and tested the original again so the owner could see exactly what was happening. It was intermittent, which is actually harder to diagnose remotely than a clean failure.
He asked if the dealer could have done the same thing. Probably, but the appointment queue for an NSX at most Acura dealers runs long because the car is uncommon enough that it doesn't slot into a fast-lane service workflow. He saved a good chunk and was driving again the same afternoon.
