Got a call in Ventura, over in the Westside neighborhood, from a guy who said his 2000 NSX key was "dead." That word always catches my attention on these because there is no battery in the key head to die.
When I got there, the car would crank but not fire. The green immobilizer indicator on the instrument cluster was blinking steadily, which on the Type 1 system means the transponder code did not pass. Classic no-start with fuel cut.
His NSX key was on a loaded ring. Another Acura key from his TL, a metal carabiner clip, and a gym fob. That is textbook interference on these older Honda and Acura immobilizer setups. The receiver coil around the ignition cylinder energizes the transponder passively, and if another chip or a chunk of metal is sitting right next to it, the signal gets muddied. Acura documented this in TSB 00-013 and even mentions it in the owner's manual.
I pulled the NSX key off the ring, tried it solo, and the light went solid. Fired right up. Then I cut and programmed a fresh HD106-PT transponder key on site as a backup, ran start cycles, and tested both keys clean.
He held up that old crowded ring and just laughed at it. Thought he was looking at a flatbed ride to the dealer. Instead the car never left the Westside neighborhood, and he kept a good chunk of what the parts counter would have wanted.
