I got a call out to Ventura Harbor on a 2000 Acura NSX that wouldn't crank. The owner's first words were that the key had "died." That framing makes sense on most modern cars where the fob runs on a battery, but the 2000 NSX transponder key has no battery at all. Nothing dies in the key head.
The immobilizer indicator was blinking steadily, which on this system means the control unit is awake but not seeing a valid code from the transponder. He had the NSX key on a ring with at least one other Honda-style key and a metal clip. That combination is a known interference problem on this generation. The immobilizer receiver energizes the transponder through a coil at the ignition collar, and having another transponder key in the same field can corrupt the read before it even completes.
I had him hold the ring while I slid the NSX key off by itself. Tried it alone. The light behavior changed on the first attempt.
The existing key was still valid. No programming loss, no ECM issue. I cut a fresh backup transponder key from the correct blank for this application, enrolled it at the vehicle, ran start cycles with both keys to confirm both registered cleanly, and checked the locks while I was there.
The human moment: he picked up the old ring afterward, looked at it for a second, and just said "that was it?" Not annoyed. Just genuinely surprised that a crowded key ring nearly sent him to the dealer for a car that was running fine the whole time. The NSX stayed right there in the Ventura Harbor lot, never moved, never got towed.
