2004 Acura NSX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What is the transponder key on a 2004 Acura NSX and how does it work?

There is a small chip embedded in the plastic head of the key. When you insert it and turn toward start, the receiver coil around the ignition cylinder powers that chip through electromagnetic induction and reads the ID code it sends back. That code gets checked against what is stored in the immobilizer system. If it matches, the engine management system allows the car to start normally.

Q: Why is the dealer so slow on NSX key work when the programming itself is quick?

It is the workflow, not the procedure. Pulling your VIN-specific security data, running the immobilizer registration, and confirming the key - that part genuinely does not take long with the right equipment. Everything around it does. The repair order, the tech queue, sourcing the blank, logging into the back-end system. On a low-volume vehicle like the NSX, you also run into the reality that not every dealer tech does this job regularly. That unfamiliarity adds time.

Q: Can I use a key blank I bought online for my 2004 NSX?

You can, but it still has to be cut to your vehicle and programmed to the immobilizer before it will start the car. A blank is just that - blank. The cut has to match your lock, and the chip inside has to be registered to your specific car. If someone sold you a blank claiming it would just work, that is not accurate.

Q: My 2004 NSX key turns hard in the ignition. Is that a key problem or a cylinder problem?

Usually the key. On a car this age, the blade wears down over years of use and the cuts get rounded off slightly. That worn profile starts fighting the wafers inside the cylinder instead of gliding past them, which is what makes it feel stiff or gritty. The cylinder itself can also wear, but the blade goes first in most cases.

2004 Acura NSX Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

In Ventura, up near Serra Cross and Grant Park, I got a call from a gentleman who owned a 2004 NSX. He was older, used a cane, and did not put a lot of miles on the car anymore, but it was how he got to his medical appointments. His daughter usually handled logistics when something came up. That week she was out of town.

His only key had gotten stiff in the ignition over time, and the separate remote had stopped responding entirely. He was not locked out, but he was nervous about the blade giving out completely and leaving him stranded. Getting the car to a dealer across Ventura was not something he wanted to figure out on his own.

I came out to him. Decoded the lock, verified the cut, and made a fresh blade that turned clean. Then programmed the transponder chip to the car so the immobilizer accepted it. The remote is a separate unit on these, completely independent of the ignition key, so I walked him through that system too and showed him where the battery lives so he would know when it was time to swap it.

He did not have to arrange a ride, call his daughter, or sit in a dealer waiting room for half a day. One visit, his parking lot, everything working before I packed up the van.

Acura NSX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How long does the Acura dealer take for an NSX key replacement?▼

The actual programming side of a transponder key job on these is not the slow part. A tech with the right diagnostic equipment can get through it in 15 to 20 minutes. The dealer visit is a different animal entirely. They write up a repair order, queue you behind whatever else is in the shop, pull the blank from parts, and load into their system to retrieve the security data tied to your VIN.
