Got a call from an NSX owner in Goleta, near Fairview Town Center. The car had been sitting about three weeks and the battery was flat. He jumped it, the engine cranked but would not fire, and the green key light on the dash was blinking instead of going out. He was already looking up flatbed prices to get it to the nearest Acura dealer.
That key light behavior is what gets people on these. On the 1998 NSX immobilizer system, the indicator should come on with ignition, then go off once the antenna ring around the cylinder reads the ID13 chip. When it keeps blinking, it looks like the car forgot the key. But on this generation, transponder registration is stored in the immobilizer ECU, not in volatile memory that drains with the battery.
I met him in the lot with my diagnostic gear and a fresh BHD106-PT blank already cut to code. Checked his battery voltage first. It was reading just under 11 volts even after the jump, not enough for the immobilizer module to handshake cleanly with the chip. We got a proper charge on the battery, stable above 12.4, and tried his original key again. Fired right up. Key light went solid, then off, exactly like it should.
He did that half-laugh people do when they already had the tow planned in their head. Just nodded and said he should have called before spending an hour on the phone with the dealer parts counter.
He still walked away with a spare programmed key, done on site, for a fraction of what that dealer trip would have cost him in parts, labor, and tow fees combined.
