1996 Acura NSX Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out near Camino Real Marketplace, an NSX owner found me through a quick search while sitting in a parking area off Sandspit Road. He'd been running on one key for years, and that morning the ignition just stopped cooperating. Not locked up, not broken, just fighting him. Ten seconds of wiggling turned into two minutes every single day until that day it wouldn't catch at all.
I looked at the blade first. The cuts were rounded and shallow, exactly what thirty years of daily use does to a single key. That's the typical order of failure on these: the key goes soft before the cylinder gives out. The cylinder itself was still fine once I got a proper cut in there.
I pulled the code off his original blade, set up a replacement blank on the cutter, and had a working key in his hand in about ten minutes. He turned the ignition and it moved like the car was new.
Then he asked about the all-metal key Acura sold as an upgrade back in the day. The one with the nickel-copper alloy construction and the reputation for outlasting the plastic-head versions by decades. I told him I can cut one if he sources the blank, but the geometry is particular and I have to take my time with it. He nodded and pocketed the key I'd just cut. Most guys want a key that works today and figure out the collectible stuff later.
The dealer comparison never really came up. On a car this age, the service lane isn't set up for a ten-minute mechanical key job, and he knew it.
