Got a call from an NSX owner in Ventura, near Surfers Point, on a Saturday morning. His only key was a black master, and the plastic head had developed a crack that let the transponder chip inside move around. Most mornings the car fired right up. Other mornings it didn't, and he'd have to hold the key at a specific angle against the ignition collar and wait for something to click. The immobilizer warning light would flicker on the dash, then settle. Sometimes that was enough. Sometimes it wasn't.

He'd already talked to the Acura dealer. Without the red key, they wanted to replace the immobilizer control unit entirely. That meant ordering the part, scheduling a drop-off, and leaving the car at a dealership for multiple days. For an NSX. Outside. He wasn't doing that.

I drove out with the right blank and my equipment. Read the chip data off his cracked black key while the transponder was still functional enough to communicate, wrote it to the new blank, and cut the key to his vehicle. About 25 minutes start to finish, right in his driveway off the coast.

He started the car twice without thinking about it, which is the whole point. Then he looked at both keys in his hand for a second, like he was comparing them. The cracked one went into a drawer as a backup. The new one went on his ring. He didn't need to tow it anywhere, didn't need to leave it sitting, and paid a fraction of what the dealer had quoted him for a job that doesn't even fix the root problem the way cloning does.
