I had a 2000 Acura NSX call in Ventura, over in the Westside neighborhood, where the owner swore the key was "dead." That wording trips people up on these because there is no battery in the key head to die.
The car would not crank, and the immobilizer indicator was blinking. He had the NSX key on a crowded ring with another Honda or Acura style key and a metal clip. That is a real problem on this system. Acura even warns about it in the owner manual, and bulletin 00-013 explains how the immobilizer receiver energizes the transponder and checks the code before it will allow crank and fuel.
I separated the ring, tested the existing key by itself, and the light behavior changed right away. Then I cut and programmed a fresh transponder key on site using the correct HD106-PT style blank for this platform, verified start cycles, and checked the locks.
The human moment was when he held up the old crowded key ring and just laughed at it. He thought he was headed for a tow and a parts counter conversation. Instead, the NSX never moved from the same spot in the Westside neighborhood, and he was back on the road for a fraction of what the dealer route usually turns into.
