2001 Acura NSX Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
In Ventura, over in the College Area, I got a call for a 2001 Acura NSX and the owner was already halfway convinced it had to go to the dealer.
He told me the key turned fine, but the car would not start and the immobilizer light behavior had him spooked. That is a common one on these. The 2001 NSX uses Acura's Type 1 immobilizer setup, with a transponder key and a receiver ring at the ignition switch, not a push-button system and not a smart fob. TSB 00-013 even spells out the Type 1 layout and what happens when the key is not recognized. (Auto Electronics 101)
When I got there, I kept it simple first. I had him move the extra keys off the ring, then I checked key cut wear and transponder response. The dash indicator pattern matched a key recognition problem, not some mystery ECU issue. I cut and programmed the correct transponder key blank style for the car, then verified crank and start, and rechecked with the original key so we knew exactly which one was failing. The new key worked clean.
He was relieved when I explained this NSX key has no battery inside the transponder head, so there was nothing to replace in the key itself. It was a key and immobilizer handshake problem, handled on site for way less than the dealer route. (Auto Electronics 101)
