In Ventura, in the Telegraph Road shopping corridor, I got a 2006 Acura RL call that sounded like a dying fob. The owner could lock and unlock with the buttons, but the driver door would not respond to touch. Then the MID started tossing “CHECK KEYLESS ACCESS SYSTEM.” It’s a common forum complaint on these KB1 cars.
I didn’t guess. I tested. Passenger handle touch unlock worked. Driver handle touch unlock did nothing. Remote buttons were still solid. That pattern lines up with Acura service bulletin 08-059 (Dec 19, 2008): water can leak into the outer handle and take out the door lock sensor.
I pulled the handle trim just enough to check the sensor plug and harness were seated. No drama, no magic fix with a battery swap. This one needed a handle repair, not a key.
So I did what matters in the moment. I cut a fresh insert key as a backup, verified the RL would start and run normally, and walked them through getting in and out with the fob while that handle is acting up. When they realized they weren’t leaving the car stuck in that lot, their shoulders dropped.
