In Ventura, over in the Thompson Boulevard district, a guy called about his 2007 Acura RL. Bought it used with one working smart key. He wasn't locked out, but he knew the math. One remote between him and a tow truck.
He handed me the fob and I flipped it over. FCC ID ACJ8D8E24A04, labeled Driver 2 memory position. The metal blade inside was the HD103-PT emergency insert, the one that replaces Acura part number 35111-SJA-305. Still cut clean, no visible wear on the sidebar.
I decoded the driver door cylinder, cut a fresh insert blade for the new remote, then plugged into the OBD-II port to register a second matching keyless access remote. The RL's immobilizer runs Honda's rolling code system tied to the PCM, so both the proximity function and the transponder chip in the insert have to be paired.
Halfway through registration, i-HDS threw the "no communication" error I was already expecting on this platform. Pulled the insert, popped the ignition knob cover, keyed on with the bare blade, and the tool picked right back up. No drama.
The human moment was him watching my hands the whole time, like the original fob might vanish if he blinked. Once both remotes started the RL back to back, his shoulders dropped about three inches.
Dealer route would have meant dropping the car off and waiting days. This was handled right there on Thompson Boulevard.
