2005 Acura RL
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly does the key for a 2005 Acura RL do?

It opens the door lock cylinder and turns the ignition. That's the job. This is a metal key cut to the vehicle. If you've seen fobs or push-button setups on other RL years, this isn't that. Replacement means getting the blade cut correctly to your car's lock profile, and that's the whole service.

Q: Why does getting a replacement key sometimes take longer than people expect at the dealer?

A few reasons, none of them about the key itself. Dealers route you through service scheduling, which can mean a wait of days just to get in front of a tech. Then there's verification paperwork, and if the service advisor isn't familiar with the vehicle, there can be internal back-and-forth about what the job actually requires. For a mechanical key, the cut is the job. Mobile service skips every layer of that.

Q: I only have one key left for my 2005 RL. Is it worth getting a spare cut now or waiting until it fails?

Cut the spare now. A worn key that's still turning will decode cleanly and produce an accurate duplicate. A key that's snapped off in the cylinder, or worn past the point of reading, turns a simple job into a more involved one. One working key is a bad position to be in, especially with a vehicle this age where the key has probably seen a decade or two of use. Get the spare while it's easy.

Q: Can a locksmith make a key for my 2005 RL if I've lost the only one I had?

Yes. Lost-key situations on a vehicle like this are handled by decoding the lock directly. I can pull the cut from a door lock cylinder and produce a working key from that reading. No original key required. Bring proof of ownership and I can come to the vehicle wherever it's parked in Ventura.

2005 Acura RL Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Downtown Ventura, midday. The owner of a 2005 Acura RL called because he had one key left and it was worn down to the point where it was getting fussy in the door lock cylinder. Not failing every time, just often enough that he'd started leaving the car unlocked rather than risk it.

He'd priced out the dealer route. The feedback he got was vague on timeline and the opposite of vague on price.

I came out to him. The job was reading the existing worn key, decoding the cut, and producing a fresh replacement cut to spec for the vehicle. No waiting on parts. No scheduling around a service department's calendar.

He watched me work on the hood of my van. New key, tested in the door cylinder, tested in the ignition. Turned clean both times on the first try.

He mentioned he'd been dreading it for weeks. Most people do. They build it up into something complicated in their heads and it turns out to be a short appointment in a parking lot, for a fraction of what they expected.

Acura RL Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the dealer to get a replacement key made for my 2005 RL?▼

No. A replacement key for this vehicle is a metal key cut to your car. I can cut one on site in Downtown Ventura without a dealer visit, without an appointment wait, and without parts ordering. As long as I can decode the cut from your existing key or pull the key code through the lock, you get a working key the same day.
