1996 Acura RL
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long does it take to make and program a 1996 Acura RL transponder key?

Depends on what you are starting with. If you have one working key, the job moves quickly. I cut a new blade to match, transfer the chip data, and run it through a few start cycles to confirm it is solid. The whole thing is usually done in under an hour. Zero keys takes longer. I have to originate the blade cuts from the lock or by decoding the ignition, and then register the new key to the immobilizer.

Q: Is getting a mobile key for a 1996 Acura RL faster than going to the dealer?

For the actual technical work, the hands-on time is roughly the same. The difference is everything around it. Dealers want the car on their lot, scheduled in advance, and on their timeline. On a vehicle this age, parts availability can also slow things down. I come to where the car is, in Upper East or anywhere else in Santa Barbara, and finish the job there.

Q: The immobilizer light stays on and the car cranks but will not stay running. Is my key failing?

That crank-and-stall pattern on a 1996 RL is a classic sign that the immobilizer is not reading the transponder chip in the key. The engine control system sees the crank, allows a brief start, and then cuts fuel when it does not get a valid chip signal. A few things cause this. First, check the key itself. The plastic head can crack over time, and if the chip inside has shifted or broken, the read range drops to almost nothing.

Q: My 1996 Acura RL keyless remote stopped working. Does that mean my ignition key is also bad?

No. On the 1996 RL, the keyless remote and the ignition key are completely independent. The fob does not start the car. It just handles the door locks. If the remote stops working and the key still starts the car, the key is fine. Most dead-remote calls on these come down to a discharged battery or a lost sync. Both are fixable on the spot.

1996 Acura RL Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call out of Upper East, Santa Barbara. Underground parking structure, low ceiling, one worn key left, and the owner was already thinking about how to get the RL towed somewhere if things went sideways.

She did not need a tow. She needed the right person to come to her.

I pulled in, assessed the ceiling clearance, and set up right there in the garage. The worn key had enough left to decode the blade cuts, so I cut a fresh key to match. The transponder chip got copied over to the new head, and the RL fired on the first try. Stayed running. She watched the dash like she was waiting for bad news that never came.

Then she mentioned the keyless remote. Separate fob, separate issue. The battery was dead and it had lost its sync with the car, so I handled that on the spot and walked every button to confirm it was talking to the car again.

She never moved the vehicle. It sat right there in its spot the whole time. That was the whole point.

The dealer would have wanted the car on their lot, on their terms. She was not interested in that. Neither was I.

Acura RL Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I lost my only 1996 Acura RL key after hours. Can you come to Upper East in Santa Barbara?▼

Yes. EZ Car Keyz is mobile, so the car stays exactly where it is while I work. On a 1996 RL, the ignition key is a transponder key, meaning a cut metal blank alone will not start it. The chip in the key head has to be registered to the immobilizer, so this is not a hardware store dupe situation. For an all-keys-lost job, have your ID and vehicle registration ready.
