That crank-and-stall pattern on a 1996 RL is a classic sign that the immobilizer is not reading the transponder chip in the key. The engine control system sees the crank, allows a brief start, and then cuts fuel when it does not get a valid chip signal. A few things cause this.

First, check the key itself. The plastic head can crack over time, and if the chip inside has shifted or broken, the read range drops to almost nothing. The car may start fine sometimes and fail others, which is the chip making intermittent contact.

Second, if the key is a copy that someone had made at a hardware store without realizing this car needs a chipped key, it will do exactly this: crank, brief fire, stall. A metal-only blank has no chip to read.

If neither of those fits your situation, the antenna ring around the ignition cylinder is worth looking at. On a car this age, corrosion or a loose connection at that ring can interrupt the signal even from a perfectly good key. That is a diagnosis job, not a key job, but it starts with ruling out the key first.

My 1996 Acura RL keyless remote stopped working. Does that mean my ignition key is also bad?
