2006 Acura RL MECHANICAL-KEY Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
In Ventura, over in the Telegraph Road shopping corridor, I got a call on a 2006 Acura RL that sounded like a fob going bad. The owner said the driver door would not respond to the handle touch sensor, and the MID kept throwing "CHECK KEYLESS ACCESS SYSTEM." But the remote buttons still locked and unlocked fine. Classic forum complaint on these KB1 cars.
I didn't guess. I tested. Passenger handle touch unlock worked. Driver handle did nothing. Fob buttons were solid both sides. That pattern lines up with Acura service bulletin 08-059, issued December 2008. Water gets past the outer handle seal and kills the door lock request sensor on the driver side. It is not a key problem.
I pulled the handle trim just enough to check the sensor connector and harness. Seated, but the sensor itself was shot. No magic battery swap was going to fix this one.
So I did what mattered in the moment. I cut a fresh HD103 insert blade as a backup, verified the RL would start and run normally with the existing fob, and walked the owner through how to get in and out while the handle sensor is down. Lock with the fob button, unlock with the fob button, start with the fob in range. Simple workaround until the handle gets repaired.
When they realized they were not leaving the car stuck in that parking lot, their shoulders dropped about three inches.
