I got a call out to the College neighborhood in Ventura from an RL owner who was convinced his fob was dying. The driver door handle would not respond to touch. The passenger side worked fine. The buttons locked and unlocked without drama. And the dash was showing a warning about the keyless access system.
He had already bought a replacement fob online. Hadn't programmed it yet, just had it sitting in the cupholder as if proximity to the car might help.
I didn't touch the new fob first. I tested what was in front of me. Buttons responsive, passenger handle touch working, driver handle touch dead. That pattern tells you something specific. It's not the key. It's the door side. Water intrusion into the outer door handle is a known issue on these cars in the forums, and it takes out the sensor in that handle. The fob was doing its job fine.

What I did that day was cut a fresh insert key as a working backup, confirmed the car started and ran normally, and made sure he had a way in and out of that car without depending on the driver handle while he sorted the repair. When he realized he wasn't stranded and could still use the car, the whole energy of the call changed.
