2004 Acura RL
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How do I avoid scam locksmiths when my 2004 RL key fails?

The pattern is predictable. Vague quote on the phone, no real questions about your car, then the price jumps once they're standing in front of you. A legitimate automotive locksmith will ask whether you still have a working key, because that changes the whole job on a transponder system. They'll explain what they're doing before they start, show you the key blank before cutting, and require two clean start cycles before they consider the job done.

Q: Will a replacement key work the same as the original on my 2004 RL?

Yes, if the work is done correctly. The ignition key has to be cut to match your lock and programmed to the immobilizer system. One without the other won't get you anywhere. The remote transmitter is a separate unit entirely and works independently from the ignition key. If you're replacing or adding a remote, match the factory FCC ID printed on the back of your existing fob. Any replacement transmitter needs to be programmed to the car.

Q: I only have one key left for my 2004 RL. What happens if I lose it before getting a spare made?

All-keys-lost on a transponder system is a more involved job than a standard add-a-key. When there's a working key present, I can program a second key alongside it. When there are no working keys at all, the immobilizer has to be handled differently, and it takes longer. Bottom line: get the spare made while you still have the original. It's faster, simpler, and cheaper. Waiting until you're locked out of options costs you more in every direction.

Q: The immobilizer light on my 2004 RL keeps blinking after I turn the key. Is the key bad or is something else wrong?

A blinking immobilizer light after you turn the key is the car saying it didn't recognize the transponder. A few things can cause that. If the key never worked, it wasn't programmed correctly. If it worked before and suddenly stopped, the transponder inside the key can fail over time, especially if the key took physical damage or got exposed to a strong magnetic field.

2004 Acura RL Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in East Ventura, I got a call from a physical therapist who wanted a spare key for her 2004 Acura RL. She had a narrow window between patients and didn't want to deal with a dealer appointment.

She came prepared. ID, registration, VIN ready to verify. And she had her one working key with her, which made this a clean add-a-key job instead of the more involved all-keys-lost process.

I duplicated the mechanical cut first, then used my transponder equipment to program the new key to her car's immobilizer system. No guesswork. When the chip gets read correctly, you know before you ever walk to the car.

Then the test. Key in, turn to ON, watch the immobilizer light. It came on for a second, then went out. Started clean. We did it twice. Both times exactly the way it should behave.

She checked her schedule and was back at work in the same parking lot she started in. She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a multi-day process because they'd have to order the key. I wasn't even a punchline in that story. She just didn't have a few days to leave her car somewhere.

Acura RL Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Are you licensed and insured to make a 2004 Acura RL key in Ventura?▼

Yes. I'm the owner-tech at EZ Car Keyz, licensed through California BSIS as a locksmith company (LCO #6792), and I carry insurance. Every job starts with ownership verification: your ID and current registration, with the VIN matching the car in front of me. Then I cut, program, and test on-site before anything gets packed up. If a locksmith won't tell you their license number before they come out, that's your answer right there.
